I heart gay cowboys.

I have a new obsession, and it's called Brokeback Mountain.

I spent the afternoon reading Annie Proulx's short story after [livejournal.com profile] halfdutch raved about the movie, and oh my god. I've never, NEVER, in all my life read something so raw and emotionally powerful. It leveled me, to the point where I still can't really discuss the finer points without going all wibbly again. The writing is gorgeous, simple yet so incredibly complex and stunning in its details, from the surroundings to their closed-off, heartbreaking relationship. I only wish I could write like this.

Heartbreaking really feels too light--more like stomp-on-your-heart-and-watch-it-die. I'm so in love with this story, with Jack and Ennis, with Jake and Heath for wanting to play them, with Ang Lee, EVERYTHING. I cannot wait to see this movie and bawl my eyes out all over again. I've already poured over posts at [livejournal.com profile] wranglers and caught scenes from it, and GUH. Jesus fucking Christ, I want to marry this story.

*goes wibbly again*

Must have BBM icons...

I'm just waiting to give it my Movie of the Year award... I'm sure it's going to be phenomenal, not to mention heart wrenching.

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
I covet your icon, GUH.

I'm already thinking it's going to be one of my favoritest movies EVER.

[identity profile] halfdutch.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
*nuzzles you*

YEP. Movie of the year. For me, anyway. Jack and Heath are my new heroes. I think all of my flist will be obsessed with this movie like no other. Not even HP! LOL. And yes, I must go read the story myself now.

[livejournal.com profile] green_queen made some nice BBM icons. I'm going to attempt to use mine but since I recently reuploaded it, it might show up as something else due to recent LJ wonkiness.

[identity profile] halfdutch.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
*sighs* That is what shows up when I try to use the BBM icon, so someone somewhere is trying to use Jennifer Aniston to flip people off and instead they're getting Jake and Ennis with an icon that says "lovers."

I can cheer myself up by thinking that some very straightlaced, non-slasher is ending up with some of those porntastic, animated QAF icons instead of, oh, bunnies or something. ;-D

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, I don't think you meant to use the "flair" icon. XD

Should I just go pour over your user pics? Dude, someone was using this Jake/Jack icon over at [livejournal.com profile] wranglers that had The Hug scene in it, and I about died.

[identity profile] halfdutch.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
The hug scene slayed me. *wibbles* I only have one BBM icon uploaded. I'd like some new icons from the movie too.

[identity profile] isis2015.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't it wonderful? As soon as I heard about the movie, I got curious (because all I'd heard is 'gay cowboys' at that point) so I bought the book and...ug! I cannot wait for this movie. Is is gay cowboy month yet?

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
IS IT GAY COWBOY MONTH YET?!

*flails*

[identity profile] julissak01.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Took you long enough. ;P

But yeah. I don't know how I'm going to manage not to fall apart in the theater. Dude.

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
MAY I HAVE YOUR ICON OMG???

[identity profile] julissak01.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha. Sure. You can also have this.

[identity profile] julissak01.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
*SNUGS*

There are a few more h e r e (http://www.livejournal.com/users/fake_boheme__/3801.html#cutid1), if you're still feeling the gay love.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_illuminez/ 2005-11-21 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Oh SQUEE! It's one of the best movies I have ever seen. I saw it at the Toronto Film Festival a while back and I was hard core promoting it. I had read the story before hand and thought it couldn't possibly be topped by a movie. Oh how wonderfuly wrong I was. ^_^

Also,

Happy [Early] Birthday....

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
GUH!!! Thank you!! :D

And oh my god, I'm so happy the movie is as good as the book, because I seriously don't think anything could top it, either.

[identity profile] cmere.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
OMG, THANK GOD YOU HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT. OMG.

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
YOUR ICON PLEEEEEAAZZZ

Must. Have.

[identity profile] crystalkirk.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
I bought it yesterday and read it last night, so I agree with you completely. It really was a beautiful story.

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
SO wonderful, I hope the movie makes millions of dollars and wins a gazillion Oscars. :D

[identity profile] color7me7in.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Random comment...I was browsing ljs for Lost stuff and at the mention of Brokeback Mountain, tears came to my eyes and I had to comment. I read the novella a few weeks ago in Annie Proulx's collection "Close Range" and...Jesus. I was hollowed-out and exhausted and exhilerated and raised and spun...
I finished it and felt like a child and an old woman at the same time. And I'm pretty sure tire irons will make me cry for the rest of my life. And I loved every word.

I'm looking forward to the movie like crazy, but it's not just "gay cowboys are hot!" anymore (though there's plenty of that)...and I think you know what i mean.

I'm glad to know other people enjoyed it as well, and I hope you're not creeped out by the randomness. :)

Oh, and I found some beautiful BBM icons here:

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
I think you just summed up everything I've been feeling since I finished reading it earlier today. I am emotionally drained--and then I turned around and watched the trailer, LOL! So much to take in, and that scene with Ennis and the shirts will kill me forever, I think.

THANK YOU for the icon linkage, it's greatly appreciated! And no, not creeped out at all, thanks for commenting! :)

[identity profile] ambiguousreason.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't know the movie was based on a short story - I'll have to read it.

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, DO IT. You won't regret it, I swear.

[identity profile] singingrl.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
I actually haven't read the story yet, I should lol...but I did manage to score tickets to a screening a day before the opening with a Q&A with the director :)

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
My jealousy is eating me alive. ;D

[identity profile] rangergirl.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
Guh. I just saw the trailer last night, and it nearly killed me. Goddamn living-in-the-UK-not-getting-stuff-for-ages syndrome, I won't get to see it until 2006 >__<

There's a short story? Alright, I'mna go read that, keep myself vaguely sane until I can finally SEE THE MOVIE. *dies of impatience*

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, you poor thing. *pets*

Ummm, maybe you can DL it eventually? I'm sure it'll be worth the wait. :D

[identity profile] rangergirl.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
You can bet I'll be desperately whoring all the torrent sites I can find in the first week of release. Heh, and oh yeah, it'll sure as hell be worth it. *squees and runs to DL trailer*

[identity profile] inthekeyofd.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw the trailer and when the hugging of the shirt occurs..nearly broke my heart!! I really can't wait to see it, but I have a feeling that the ending will probably tear my heart out.

And if you liked J.G. before, read some of his interviews lately, I read one in The Metro on my way to work and was like, whoa, Jake, you rock!!

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
So you've read the story, too? God, the shirt scene is the one part I can't reread without crying all over again.

I know, Jake is my new crush. The fact that he's defending the shit out of the fact that yes, these two are lovers, not "really good friends", is just awesome. I love him. :D

[identity profile] inthekeyofd.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't read it, but it's in the previews and I was like..*guh* when I saw it..just killed me!

In the Metro he said something like he's never been attracted to another man, but he would be okay with it if he was..totally secure in his masculinity to admit that. Love him!!!

[identity profile] gobsmackit.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, that's it, I'm reading it over the mini-break next - eesh, this! - week, because [livejournal.com profile] halogirl8's been linking to her BBM RPG threads at [livejournal.com profile] the_blank_slate and it's soooo good and now you're on about it and I don't want to be left behind! Besides, I want to have read the book before the movie.

I can't believe it's not out for another three weeks!

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG, you'll die. I know you will. This story has kinda sorta killed my muse, especially in the Jack/James department, since she does everything I've ever wanted to do only fifty billion times better. *sighs longingly*
(deleted comment)

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I almost feel like joining some kind of BBM fan club. :P And yeah, SERIOUS lack of gay cowboys in pop culture.

Do NOT start putting ideas in my head, OMG...

[identity profile] astra2104.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if you're looking for one: http://s14.invisionfree.com/White_of_the_Moon/ is one I can definitely recommend...very friendly, just a tad obsessed and all of us have read the story ;-) ...and there's fanfic...and pictures...and discussions...and have I mentioned we're just a bit obsessed?

[identity profile] thefragile7393.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Movie is coming out soon with Heath Ledger and...someone else. But I'm sure you knew that already, since I didn't read comments to this post and someone's likely told you already lol.

[identity profile] velouramor.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
What is Brokeback Mountain? I've never heard of it.
*ducks*

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2005-12-06 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a short story by Annie Proulx that's been made into a movie that's coming out a week or so, about two cowboys that fall for each other but can never actually be together. :)

[identity profile] velouramor.livejournal.com 2005-12-06 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy homo-erotic angst Batman! I must see it!
