I have a new obsession, and it's called Brokeback Mountain.

I spent the afternoon reading Annie Proulx's short story after halfdutch raved about the movie, and oh my god. I've never, NEVER, in all my life read something so raw and emotionally powerful. It leveled me, to the point where I still can't really discuss the finer points without going all wibbly again. The writing is gorgeous, simple yet so incredibly complex and stunning in its details, from the surroundings to their closed-off, heartbreaking relationship. I only wish I could write like this.

Heartbreaking really feels too light--more like stomp-on-your-heart-and-watch-it-die. I'm so in love with this story, with Jack and Ennis, with Jake and Heath for wanting to play them, with Ang Lee, EVERYTHING. I cannot wait to see this movie and bawl my eyes out all over again. I've already poured over posts at wranglers and caught scenes from it, and GUH. Jesus fucking Christ, I want to marry this story.

Okay, that's it, I'm reading it over the mini-break next - eesh, this! - week, because halogirl8's been linking to her BBM RPG threads at the_blank_slate and it's soooo good and now you're on about it and I don't want to be left behind! Besides, I want to have read the book before the movie.

I can't believe it's not out for another three weeks!

OMG, you'll die. I know you will. This story has kinda sorta killed my muse, especially in the Jack/James department, since she does everything I've ever wanted to do only fifty billion times better. *sighs longingly*
