Something I've been thinking about lately is how we interpret things in this fandom. Until last June, I'd never been heavily involved in an RPS fandom; I was used to working with a fictional media and drawing from subtexts within. But RPS is a whole other animal - it's both fantasy and reality mixed together until, most of the time, differentiating between the two becomes sort of impossible after awhile. For example: I only learned a few months ago that Pete calling Patrick "'Trick" is a fanon thing. There's no "canon" proof that Pete's ever called him by that nickname, but I'd read it so many times in fic that I simply assumed somewhere along the way he'd said it. We take bits and pieces of what we read and *think* we know about these guys and draw our own conclusions, whether they're right or wrong.

Everyone has their own opinions and favorites and way of interpreting pictures/videos/interviews, etc., and that's awesome, that's what makes fandom great. But in the end, it's all relative. Mr. Foxx STILL doesn't see how SGA is all about Sheppard and McKay's epic love for one another, no matter how many times he watches it. He also doesn't see how Panic are hopelessly gay for one another. Granted, he doesn't view the world with slash goggles like I do, but still. Relative. I think it was pearl_o who said a few weeks ago that one person's OTP is another person's epic friendship.

In the spirit of celebrating differences of opinions, let's play a game called Interpret the Gay. Behind the cut are a series of photos, and for each photo, feel free to tell me what YOU think is going on. I'll play, too!

Obviously, Jon caught Ryan and Brendon making out and has no explanation for it. Brendon is sorry and would really like to not be grounded. Ryan is grumpy that he was unable to get off. Spencer is bemused.

I generally think most things in fic are fanon until canon proves me wrong. Then when I find something I read in fic is real/ or actually happened, I squee and flail. This is why bandom is so awesome. Things I think only happen in fics actually happened!

1) Ryan and Brendon are making pout faces at Jon Walker because he will not buy them ice-cream, or make them coffee. Jon is like "Come on guys no seriously I'm tired" and Spencer is like "Well, Jon Walker, it appears this is KARMA for that one time you mocked my shoes. One night on the couch wasn't enough!! You will be paying me back with your soul FOREVER. Also, just because you are cute doesn't mean you can be mean to Ryan!" PANIC LONG-SUFFERING MOM SPENCER SMITH.

2) Spencer is relating to Ryan his issues and adventures with Jon Walker! Jon is all "RYAN TAKE MY SIDE" and Brendon is like "...whatever guys. :("

3) Ryan is making a lewd joke about Brendon, Jon and Spencer are cracking up inside and kind of leaning into each other a little and continuing the joke. Brendon should be offended, but it's RYAN and he's helpless to not laugh his ass off, aww.

4) Ryan's actually paying attention to his fans while Brendon points something out, and Spencer is fighting off this giant grin at how adorkable Jon Walker looks.

5) Spencer is animatedly telling some story that involves him and Ryan's hilarious adventures as preteens. Brendon is excited because it's, like, FREE RYAN-MOCKING MATERIAL. Jon is meditative and just listening, not really upset that it's something he can't share in, but just... taking it in? Like it's some part of Spencer he wants to understand and treasure, even if it's not just his to know. Ryan is helping tell the story, just... more sedately. And trying to ignore the inevitable later-times mocking.

6) Brendon and Ryan are, for once, not actually trying to look couple-y! They're just hanging out and having an adorable conversation when caught by camera-people, and Brendon, being Brendon, totally forgot that his arm was there. Jon thinks this is hilarious, so he puts his arm around Spencer and makes a Serious Face which makes him look silly, and Spencer is both trying not to laugh at Jon being silly and trying not to smile at his arm around his waist. Later, when the picture gets out, Brendon is loudly offended at Jon, and Ryan makes light of it but is secretly embarrassed because it was so nice he didn't notice.

THE END. Ugh, I am so ridiculously tinhatty, it is insane. I-I THINK MY OTPS ARE SHOWING, GUYS. Oops!
