Every Man for Himself (3.04)

Let me first say that I was ecstatic at the prospect of Oz!Sawyer, and every O'Reily vs. Sawyer plot bunny that's ever lived in my brain flailed about with much glee. Sadly, Sawyer went to the non-cool prison where wardens can plan shakedowns with the FBI and not, you know, get shanked or end up in Unit J. And silly Sawyer, don't you know that nothing good ever happens in the gym?

Maybe I'm alone in this, but Sawyer having a lovechild with Cassidy is just slightly cliched. And Cassidy is pretty dumb to actually be surprised that Sawyer would con her. Hi, he was coning you when you met him and you knew it. Gah. It's like six months learning his tricks taught her nothing. For me, it's hokey bad fanfic for Sawyer to have a little baby girl he wants nothing to with. At least it's not Kate's baby. And CLEMENTINE?! *headdesk*

Which brings me to the question of WHY do the writers always feel they have to keep insisting that Sawyer is this white trash, ignorant hick, and then show him reading Steinbeck? And quoting it, no less? Are we supposed to assume that yes, Sawyer's pretty and a little dumb, but he loves his American literature? Ugh. I hate that Sawyer seems to be the only character in the bunch that gets all the blatant contradictions.

And really, The Others are sick, sadistic fucks. What the hell is up with handcuffing Jack to a gurney with a dead body?! Jack is a doctor, people--he's seen a dead body. Leaving him alone in a room with a corpse isn't going to teach him a lesson or break his spirit, especially if the body in question wasn't even someone he cared about saving. Jack's tunnelvision and self-loathing only work if he gives a shit. You'd think Benry, with his big ol' Jack!file, would know this.

As for tonight's Ritual Abuse and Torture of Captive!Sawyer...yeah. Not only does he get the living shit beat out of him, like, a gazillion times, but he also gets the Quentin Tarantino syringe-stab-to-the-heart. Nice. And we thought Said's bamboo torture was rough. I'm also fairly certain that they could've very easily shown Sawyer that there is no hope of escape without the beatings and Pulp Fiction reenactments, but evidently a season three episode without a Sawyer!beating just doesn't make for good television. Damon and Carlton are most likely taking hints from Dick Wolf and SVU, with its weekly beating and shooting of my Stabler.

Kate only said it to stop said beating. Big surprise. Right now I am so indifferent to Skate I can't even get irritated at the fact that there will never be a full blown romance on this show that doesn't either end up with someone dead or being completely taken out of context.

I am SO NOT HAPPY with Sawyer's initial attitude toward saving Jack. "Forget" about Jack? What? Is this payback for him grabbing Kate and running? And yet Jack's still demanding to know about YOUR condition. He's a great friend, alright.

Right now I'm in this weird place where I don't know what's going on or where this show is going, and not in a oh-it's-Lost kinda way. More like a I'm-getting-terribly-vexed kind of way. Usually the Sawyer eps are the best of the best, but tonight? Not so much. Which means next week should pretty good, since the eps following the Sawyer ones always tend to suck.

I probably should've given this another day to sink in. Oh well.

ETA: I was all bummed, but then I read [livejournal.com profile] makesomelove's review and it made everything much, much better.

[identity profile] svilleficrecs.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
And see, I totally took her, "I only said it to stop them" as a lie...

[identity profile] inthekeyofd.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
They handcuffed him there so Juliet could come in, that's what Benry wanted, not more time with a corpse, but more time with Juliet, they are playing him and I think that Juliet is partially in on it, if not just sort of following orders.

But I also think that Benry's words are going to come back to haunt him, "con a con man" Yeah, dude, I watch freakin' 'Hustle' Jack's pulling a reverse, acting like he's broken and then pulling that he's really not all that emotionally drained.

And they can electrify a cage but not a crash cart?? See, total con.

The best part though, Sawyer quotes Steinbeck--and that it was Steinbeck was a HUGE HIGHLIGHT for me, but when Henry does, and it's clearly Steinbeck speak there-he doesn't recognize it??

I liked it, I'm doing part 2 of my review tomorrow, but still, as much as it's about Sawyer, Jack's part is what is eating my brain.

That's exactly how I interpreted it too. Classic mislead to have the audience think "her" referred to the corpse for a split second.

I definitely think this is an episode that needs time to sink in. It has exposition written all over it.

[identity profile] sparky77.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of felt the same way. I usually not the type to get frustrated with characters for acting stupid, but everyone was acting so very stupid in this episode and it really frustrated me.

And also, I hate the Others, but not in a fun way. I just want them to go away.

Still, I did like Sawyer's puppy killer line and I loved Jack in his last scene, so I have a little bit of hope.

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
WHY is no one concerned about Jack and the rest? Why is no one freaking out about the purple sky and the imploded hatch?! It makes no sense. Ack.

It's like Desmond is the only thing that is right in the universe.

[identity profile] sparky77.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Desmond is awesome. I feel really bad for him now because he is way to awesome to be stuck with all those idiots. He should go look for Jack and Jack could be all "What the fuck are you doing here?" and Desmond would be all "Your people are idiots." And Jack would be all, "Dude I know! Want to have sex?" And Desmond would say, "Yes, please." And then they would and then they would run away together and live happily ever after, free of idiots.

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
And Sawyer could visit.

[identity profile] sparky77.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well, obviously.

Except Desmond would sulk when Sawyer came to visit because he would have developed a fear of idiots, not a phobia, because it would be an entirely rational fear based on experience. And then Jack would get all pissed and be all "Bitch, are you disrepecting Sawyer? I'm the only one you gets to disrespect Sawyer." And Desmond would roll his eyes and go off muttering about being surrounded by idiots. And then Sawyer would look at Jack all "What the fuck?" and then Jack would look at Sawyer all "Fuck if I know." and then they'd have sex.

And then Desmond who had not wandered all that far away would be drawn back by the incredibly happy noises coming from both Sawyer and Jack and he'd realize that though his fear of idiots was healthy and good, it was wrong of him to judge Sawyer and he would try to apologize and Sawyer and Jack would be all "Dude, we're kind of busy here," and so Desmond would sadly start to leave and then Sawyer and Jack would tackle him because they were just kidding and they're both really kind of asshole, but in a good way. And then they would all have lots of sex together and be happy that a lesson had been learnt though none of them would really know what that lesson was.

Oh god, Sawyer and the kid...don't get me started. It's like something wretched a 13 year old would write on ffnet. Someone mentioned perhaps Cassidy was conning Sawyer and if that were true, maybe that could save this whole Sawyer-has-a-daughter thing from being truly awful.

I think they stuck Jack in there with the body so Benry could make him and Juliet spend more time together. But what a strange ass way to do it. So many other options would have made more sense.

I kinda loved Kate taking it back but I'm not all that sure she meant it entirely. Though her going all "Live Together" in Sawyer's face was pointedly a Jack comment. I too, am annoyed with this whole triangle thing. Fie upon it! The Lost writers are all clearly stereotypical Star Wars geeks and Trekkies because they simply DON'T know how to handle romance.

Sawyer being like that about Jack made me want to cry. Especially when Jack has been asking about Sawyer from day one.

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 04:11 am (UTC)(link)

GOD, I hope so. But I doubt it. *le sigh*

Um. I'm pretty sure Jack's got Juliet's number, what with that sly lean-in he did--made her think he wanted to be closer or something and then BURN. Silly Benry.

Sawyer being like that about Jack made me want to cry. Especially when Jack has been asking about Sawyer from day one.

Word. *weeps*

CLEMENTINE?!

All for the soundtrack, babe. UGH.

I think that was way worse than the beatings. Mostly I felt bad for the Others...is that odd or what? That poor guy, even if she was a bitch...I enjoyed that intensity in the scene where he attacked Sawyer, he was SO broken.

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
SERIOUSLY. She can have a twin named Georgia Maye.

Although...the ridiculousness of the name could almost give the Cassidy-conning-Sawyer theory merit...

[identity profile] isis2015.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly think Cassidy is conning Sawyer. I don't know why he'd fall for it, because that's what I thought from minute one. I'm thinking that she's pissed because he taught her how to con, then conned her and ran off. Now she wants her money back, and knows that Sawyer will at least think he might be the kid's father. It goes back to the whole speech Benry gave him about making him doubt and conning him. Or at least that's what I think.

And really, The Others are sick, sadistic fucks.

I agree, for so many reasons. I thought what they did to the bunny was fucked up, even though they didn't really do it. I mean, come the hell on. That's pretty twisted. Leaving Jack there with the woman's body, even more so. Though I agree with you, there didn't seem to be much point. He didn't really know the woman, and he was there to try to save her for all of two seconds, so how could he really care that deeply?

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
See my above comment. I totally wasn't going to buy into Cassidy conning Sawyer, but the name almost gives it away.

Even if Benry wanted Jack in the room with Juliet and the not the body, why handcuff him to the gurney? That's just sick.

[identity profile] makesomelove.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
SAWYER IN OZ PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE SOMEONE ANYONE

I love the Others and their diabolical ways so very, very much. Maybe some of the stuff in this ep was plain gratuitous bastardry, but that Benry is just my meanie hero.

Sawyer was reminding me of Abruzzi and it was messing with my mind and I didn't like it. But he was a much prettier Abruzzi so I guess it was alright.

Kate was totally lying to Sawyer. She luffs him. And Jack. I'm not quite sure how that works out yet.

This episode is A-OK by me because it had Desmond. Pretty, psychic Desmond. Helping Charlie and Claire and Aaron. And there were shots with Desmond and Dom in the same scene and that makes my life complete, kthnx. :P

I always get the feeling that the writers are trying to show us that Sawyer is constantly underestimated, not that's he's slightly stupid, but that he's way smarter than anyone gives him credit for. Maybe that's just me.

*draws hearts around Desmond*

But if this is the case, why show him trying and then losing horribly? Why have him mispronounce words and have Hurley correct him? You might be right, but they do a crappy of showing it.

Desmond is sex love.

I knew that you weren't going to bitch about Sawyer, Kate, and Jack being the focus because Desmond and Charlie were still in the episode. I just KNEW it.

Well, obviously. Variation is key and it never bothers me unless they hide all the other characters and ONLY show those 3. Clearly. And if the characters they aren't hiding happen to include Desmond or Charlie or Eko, well... I shall not complain. lol

Couldn't agree more. We were told this summer that this season of LOST would be about the relationships and the people on the island, and truthfully, I'm really starting to not care. I am so sick of Locke getting screwed by people, by Sawyer screwing and then being screwed in order to establish dominance in all the pissing games and by everyone treating Kate like she's (Adam's) Eve or something that really, the only reason to continue watching this show is Desmond. And frankly, if they're seriously going to pull an Alien thing as the preview for next week would suggest, I might not even stick around for Desmond.

Re: Agree.

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
If you think about it, when has there EVER been a fruitful romance on this show? Everyone dies or just sort of...doesn't say what they mean. It's frustrating, and I think after two whole seasons I've earned the right to bitch. :P

And frankly, if they're seriously going to pull an Alien thing as the preview for next week would suggest, I might not even stick around for Desmond.

Hmmm, I'm not totally sure where you're going with that (I've never seen Alien), but I do know that if they kill Eko, I will be pissed.

Let me first say that I was ecstatic at the prospect of Oz!Sawyer, and every O'Reily vs. Sawyer plot bunny that's ever lived in my brain flailed about with much glee.

Oh my brain definitely went to the same place. It was like, "Hmm...who would be the better con man - O'Reily, Keller, or Sawyer?" He was at wussy prison, though, definitely. Maybe he used to be in Oz but they...transferred him.

Although I wouldn't want to see Sawyer in a prison with Claire Howell. No thank you.

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Although I wouldn't want to see Sawyer in a prison with Claire Howell.

Um, yeah. And Sawyer doesn't need anymore beatings.

[identity profile] halfdutch.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww. :-(

But Kate DOES care about Sawyer because she stayed. And Sawyer never means what he says, now does he? So I was easily able to fanwank that he wouldn't really leave Jack behind. (Because he was yelling like crazy when he saw him!)

Now Jack's reaction to hearing Sawyer scream made my fangirl heart flip-flop. The look on his face!

And I'd heard ages ago that Sawyer was going to have a daughter so that didn't catch me by surprise. I'm seeing it lead to some really bad fanfic (and maybe that IS already very bad fanfic.) They don't need to prove to us that Sawyer has a heart because we know he does.

(It did bother me immensely that no one on the beach mentioned the captives or were doing a damn thing about them. That bothers me immensely! Although the hotness of Desmond cannot be denied.)

Is next week Eko? Eh. I don't see how that's going to fit into whatever else is going on. Believe it or not, I think a Juliet episode would fit in better and be more interesting at this point.

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2006-10-27 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
And Sawyer never means what he says, now does he?

I guess not, but can you see him acting like that if it were him and Jack, and they needed to find Kate? I doubt it. I'm just very, very down on this ep right now. I think it's because I hold all the Sawyer eps to a very high standard, and this one just did not measure up at all, IMO.

They may kill Eko if and only if he is allowed to beat Charlie about the head and neck with his Jesus stick. For then I shall rejoice. Perhaps with a rousing hymn.

I enjoyed the episode because it entertained my base, immoral, and id-worthy desires, e.g.: Shirtless Sawyer; Sawyer!Torture; bloody and wounded and owie Sawyer; Sawyer IN PRISON OMFG; bunnies!! (not attack bunnies, tho, damn); literary references; Josh Holloway tearing up those baby blues, like, GUH; Sawyer's voice breaking when Kate is climbing the monkey bars, siiiigh; and more Sawyer!Torture (it seems to be a theme with me).

I was squeeing and hoping just for one little Ozzie thing last night, like, if I were costume designer, I would have made the prison numbers look just like Oswald.

I am getting impatient with this whole Others thing. WHY are they there? WHY the hell are they torturing Sawyer (even though it entertains me so)? WHEN will they cut Josh Holloway's hair so I'm not pffft pffffting throughout the whole episode? These are important questions.

Also, Clementine? Gag.

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2006-10-27 01:01 am (UTC)(link)

Chiming in late:

I too am frustrated rather than tantalized. Especially by the placid way Juliet just moves and looks at Jack, like she's waiting for something.

I don't think Sawyer has an pacemaker implanted. a) you don't do that in an hour or however short they did, b) and you certainly don't get up and down immediately, as he did. I think it's a con to keep him in line.

As much KateHate as I have ("turn around"? What are you, twelve?), the fact that she can get out of the cage, and then went back in, totally wins at life for the rest of today.

So far, this new guy--of the new guy and girl they introduced--not impressing me. Idiot, stop polluting the ocean with your golf balls. Hit them into the jungle and then go find them. THAT would keep you occupied. (Or the polar bear fed. Win-win.)

I got the impression from last night that we only have two more eps before the hiatus. Is that the way the trailer sounded to anyone else?

rhymephile, I'm with you on Eko--or anyone--beating Charlie. But I prefer it to be Eko. So his Jesus stick could become the literal Ugly Stick, or Dumb Stick that we're always imagining some people have already been hit with.

Now if you'll excuse me, Sawyer/Jack/Keller needs some primo imagination time.

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2006-10-27 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
The last new ep will air November 8th, and then there's a hiatus until February. Woe.

I keep thinking that the ease in which Kate escapes from her cage is a trap, but maybe not. It was originally supposed to house polar bears, after all, not 100 pound monkey girls.

Now if you'll excuse me, Sawyer/Jack/Keller needs some primo imagination time.

DUDE. Seriously.
