Every Man for Himself (3.04)
Let me first say that I was ecstatic at the prospect of Oz!Sawyer, and every O'Reily vs. Sawyer plot bunny that's ever lived in my brain flailed about with much glee. Sadly, Sawyer went to the non-cool prison where wardens can plan shakedowns with the FBI and not, you know, get shanked or end up in Unit J. And silly Sawyer, don't you know that nothing good ever happens in the gym?
Maybe I'm alone in this, but Sawyer having a lovechild with Cassidy is just slightly cliched. And Cassidy is pretty dumb to actually be surprised that Sawyer would con her. Hi, he was coning you when you met him and you knew it. Gah. It's like six months learning his tricks taught her nothing. For me, it's hokey bad fanfic for Sawyer to have a little baby girl he wants nothing to with. At least it's not Kate's baby. And CLEMENTINE?! *headdesk*
Which brings me to the question of WHY do the writers always feel they have to keep insisting that Sawyer is this white trash, ignorant hick, and then show him reading Steinbeck? And quoting it, no less? Are we supposed to assume that yes, Sawyer's pretty and a little dumb, but he loves his American literature? Ugh. I hate that Sawyer seems to be the only character in the bunch that gets all the blatant contradictions.
And really, The Others are sick, sadistic fucks. What the hell is up with handcuffing Jack to a gurney with a dead body?! Jack is a doctor, people--he's seen a dead body. Leaving him alone in a room with a corpse isn't going to teach him a lesson or break his spirit, especially if the body in question wasn't even someone he cared about saving. Jack's tunnelvision and self-loathing only work if he gives a shit. You'd think Benry, with his big ol' Jack!file, would know this.
As for tonight's Ritual Abuse and Torture of Captive!Sawyer...yeah. Not only does he get the living shit beat out of him, like, a gazillion times, but he also gets the Quentin Tarantino syringe-stab-to-the-heart. Nice. And we thought Said's bamboo torture was rough. I'm also fairly certain that they could've very easily shown Sawyer that there is no hope of escape without the beatings and Pulp Fiction reenactments, but evidently a season three episode without a Sawyer!beating just doesn't make for good television. Damon and Carlton are most likely taking hints from Dick Wolf and SVU, with its weekly beating and shooting of my Stabler.
Kate only said it to stop said beating. Big surprise. Right now I am so indifferent to Skate I can't even get irritated at the fact that there will never be a full blown romance on this show that doesn't either end up with someone dead or being completely taken out of context.
I am SO NOT HAPPY with Sawyer's initial attitude toward saving Jack. "Forget" about Jack? What? Is this payback for him grabbing Kate and running? And yet Jack's still demanding to know about YOUR condition. He's a great friend, alright.
Right now I'm in this weird place where I don't know what's going on or where this show is going, and not in a oh-it's-Lost kinda way. More like a I'm-getting-terribly-vexed kind of way. Usually the Sawyer eps are the best of the best, but tonight? Not so much. Which means next week should pretty good, since the eps following the Sawyer ones always tend to suck.
I probably should've given this another day to sink in. Oh well.

ETA: I was all bummed, but then I read
makesomelove's review and it made everything much, much better.

Kate was totally lying to Sawyer. She luffs him. And Jack. I'm not quite sure how that works out yet.
This episode is A-OK by me because it had Desmond. Pretty, psychic Desmond. Helping Charlie and Claire and Aaron. And there were shots with Desmond and Dom in the same scene and that makes my life complete, kthnx. :P
I always get the feeling that the writers are trying to show us that Sawyer is constantly underestimated, not that's he's slightly stupid, but that he's way smarter than anyone gives him credit for. Maybe that's just me.
*draws hearts around Desmond*

But if this is the case, why show him trying and then losing horribly? Why have him mispronounce words and have Hurley correct him? You might be right, but they do a crappy of showing it.
Desmond is

I knew that you weren't going to bitch about Sawyer, Kate, and Jack being the focus because Desmond and Charlie were still in the episode. I just KNEW it.
