Okay, one more thought. Humor me, I've had the week from hell. :P

So this girl at work today asked me how I liked last night's ep. I said it was great, and then she starts telling about her husband's theory about how The Monster is motion controlled and the way Locke and Eko "controlled" it was by standing still. Well, I said, that was a nice theory, but unfortunately it's debunked by the fact that Locke was chased and somewhat captured by the thing in "Exodus". Which got me to thinking: when Locke tries to attempt said maneuver, he looks at The Monster and is suddenly terrified. He obviously didn't see what he saw before. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] queenbtch and her DVR, I now know that those WERE faces in the smoke, and they were faces from Eko's past. IT READ HIS BRAIN. So, the question remains--is The Island using this thing to control people? And what the hell did it show Locke that freaked him out? GAH. *brain hurts*

It showed him something we haven't seen yet ;D

I'm postponing the theorizing for a day or too, letting it sink in.

mental mind massage!

Well, you know, now that I'm pondering...maybe he thought it was "beautiful" because it showed him things about himself and his past that he feared...and he worked it out over the next few days (wasn't he missing for awhile?)

I really wish my brain was incapable of theorizing, I really do. Would save me a lot of trouble.

But yeah, I could see that--Locke maybe got to see what he *really* was, or rather what he was in "the real world"?

Check it out. They have screen grabs of all of the stuff that was inside the Smoke of Doom. Is it generally reading his mind or trolling for particularly bad stuff? I still can't figure out if Eko or Locke could see the images, too, or if they could feel that something was going on? Is it The Island that controls it? Is it specially-created Smart Smoke(tm) manufactured by the Dharma Initiative people?

*clutches head*

Oh, my brain. Dammit.

It definitely fits into the whole psychoanalyzing thing going on with Dharma...let's mind fuck EVERYONE. o__O

Dude, [livejournal.com profile] siryn99 joked that it was a dementor and I kidded around with that and said something ridiculous like, YEAH AND EKO'S GOT NOTHING GOOD TO LOSE AND ISN'T AFRAID BITCHES. Which makes no sense, since dementors feed on unhappiness, but still. There's something there that I can be bothered to think about more deeply because I think the Monstrous Mist Of Memories is a little cheesy.

Duuuuude. The Monster is a RING WRATH. :P

IT READ HIS BRAIN.

THAT'S WHAT I THINK!

[livejournal.com profile] strutterms and I just had a chat about this, actually. She thinks that Locke saw what he *needed* to see at that time. Like Eko did. Eko needed to see and face up to what he was, and therefore could become what he should be. My hubby thought that, when Eko and his brother were young, it was actually Eko that was supposed to be the priest. When Eko was taken, his brother became one instead. So, in a way, on the island he's putting his past behind him and taking up the mantle of what he should've been.

Good question, though. What DID Locke see the second time that terrified him so much? Maybe whatever force behind the monster actually didn't *want* the hatch opened. Therefore, it showed Locke something very different the second time around.

Or, maybe I'm rambling and should stop now. :P

That's an EXCELLENT thought. And yet, if that were the case and it scared the shit out of him, *why* would Locke still insist on blowing the hatch anyway?

[identity profile] rogueapprentice.livejournal.com 2006-01-13 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Good question!

Hmm...well, he did say he thought he was being 'tested', so maybe that was his perception, not that he shouldn't open the hatch. And maybe that's what it was doing, testing him.

*Brainhurt*

Wait, I can't remember, was the second time after Boone died??

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2006-01-14 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
O__O

After. Whoa.

[identity profile] halfdutch.livejournal.com 2006-01-13 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, agreed, it seemed to be reading him and presenting him with images from his own mind. It appears different to you, depending on you react, apparently. Except it didn't like Locke being friendly? :-/ What DID change the second time around for Locke?

And ... is this the same monster we've had all along? I mean, are the black smoke and the mechanical noise actually related? Or did it just not make the noise becaue it wasn't in attack mode here? How can it move trees if it's just smoke, anyway?

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2006-01-14 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
'Kay, so now [livejournal.com profile] inthekeyofdhas me thinking that the monster was maybe *punishing* Locke for the sacrifice he made with Boone?! GAH that makes me rock back and forth...

[identity profile] mangle.livejournal.com 2006-01-13 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
whoa whoa whoa. i'm liking this. interesting........ maybe it had something to do with how he lost the use of his legs?

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2006-01-14 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Quite possibly, though I doubt we'll ever find out about how that came about until much, much later, if ever. :(

[identity profile] lukesaysno.livejournal.com 2006-01-13 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
i didnt see the faces on account of the tv i was using, but wow. even the monster has depth... and probably a story.

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2006-01-14 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! Monster flashback. XD

[identity profile] inthekeyofd.livejournal.com 2006-01-13 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't Locke say it was "beautiful" or something like that, I don't know why but I thought he said something like he stared into the eye of the island..something like that, you know how Locke is.

I actually find that smoke much more intriguing than that hatch, it knows about the castaways, their secrets..which would lend credence to the "purgatory" issue..but then the writers said no.

Is it just one big giant experiment, something having to do with some sort of psychic-ness, some sort of weird weapons testing or something, maybe that's why they think they'll all die if they don't press put in those numbers..that thing will get full out and everyone will go on psychic overload. *okay, that sounds freaky, but on that island would it really suprise you?*

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2006-01-14 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I am convinced at this point (though I have no real details, heh) that this whole thing (i.e. The Island) is one giant Mind Fuck in some form or another. The Dharma Initiative was started for psychoanalytical purposes, so it only makes sense that it's been one (or a series of) long experiements to delve into the depths of the mind.
