Okay, one more thought. Humor me, I've had the week from hell. :P
So this girl at work today asked me how I liked last night's ep. I said it was great, and then she starts telling about her husband's theory about how The Monster is motion controlled and the way Locke and Eko "controlled" it was by standing still. Well, I said, that was a nice theory, but unfortunately it's debunked by the fact that Locke was chased and somewhat captured by the thing in "Exodus". Which got me to thinking: when Locke tries to attempt said maneuver, he looks at The Monster and is suddenly terrified. He obviously didn't see what he saw before. Thanks to
queenbtch and her DVR, I now know that those WERE faces in the smoke, and they were faces from Eko's past. IT READ HIS BRAIN. So, the question remains--is The Island using this thing to control people? And what the hell did it show Locke that freaked him out? GAH. *brain hurts*

I'm postponing the theorizing for a day or too, letting it sink in.
mental mind massage!
Well, you know, now that I'm pondering...maybe he thought it was "beautiful" because it showed him things about himself and his past that he feared...and he worked it out over the next few days (wasn't he missing for awhile?)

Check it out. They have screen grabs of all of the stuff that was inside the Smoke of Doom. Is it generally reading his mind or trolling for particularly bad stuff? I still can't figure out if Eko or Locke could see the images, too, or if they could feel that something was going on? Is it The Island that controls it? Is it specially-created Smart Smoke(tm) manufactured by the Dharma Initiative people?

THAT'S WHAT I THINK!
Good question, though. What DID Locke see the second time that terrified him so much? Maybe whatever force behind the monster actually didn't *want* the hatch opened. Therefore, it showed Locke something very different the second time around.
Or, maybe I'm rambling and should stop now. :P

And ... is this the same monster we've had all along? I mean, are the black smoke and the mechanical noise actually related? Or did it just not make the noise becaue it wasn't in attack mode here? How can it move trees if it's just smoke, anyway?

I actually find that smoke much more intriguing than that hatch, it knows about the castaways, their secrets..which would lend credence to the "purgatory" issue..but then the writers said no.
Is it just one big giant experiment, something having to do with some sort of psychic-ness, some sort of weird weapons testing or something, maybe that's why they think they'll all die if they don't press put in those numbers..that thing will get full out and everyone will go on psychic overload. *okay, that sounds freaky, but on that island would it really suprise you?*
