There's been this on-going battle with myself over the lack of porn in the dragonrider AU. My solution so far has been to consider possibly doing porny codas, since I'm worried about the sequel being COMPLETELY overrun with porn, ahaha. Right now, I am babbling at harriet_vane about how Jon and Brendon get stuck in a shed during a bad thunderstorm and are all wet and breathless and end up having sex for the first time. Because obviously I am writing horrible romance novels instead of adventure fantasy stories. OH WELL.

Also, I've been thinking about having a Q&A about the story ever since I went on vacation. IDK, I love talking about dragons and boys, and I felt like I couldn't really talk about it too much before BBB went live! So, if you want, feel free to comment with a question about any aspect of the storyline/pairings/backstory, and let me babble at you, too. :D

After the final scene, how do Ryan and his dragon learn to work together and trust each other? Is it an active process or does it happen as they spend more time together?

Well, here's something that will (hopefully) be worked into the sequel somehow: when Ryan shot up the machine that was taking Sy's telepathy power, he inadvertently took some of Sy's thoughts and memories into his own mind, which is how a Rider and a dragon bond. Of course, neither one of them really KNOW this, but eventually Ryan realizes that he has some of Sy's memories from before the raids. So basically, through fate and luck, the two of them managed to bond under extraordinary circumstances, and from there they sort inherently trust one another. Like soulmates. But Sy's pretty fucked up, and Ryan's greener than green, so it's not so much a trust issue as it is them learning the actual physical mechanics behind being dragon and Rider.

I'm kinda interested to hear about what Brendon and Spencer did whilst Jon and Ryan were gone. Like was it awkward for them because of the whole Jon kissing everyone and then leaving to go fight the good fight or did they just ignore it or did they do some kissing of their very own. Dude, I very nearly dropped what I was doing in the middle of writing the story to write the side story of Spencer and Brendon during the time Jon and Ryan are gone. They totally bond with one another since Spencer is so close to Ryan (whom Brendon has feelings for) and Brendon's so close to Jon (whom Spencer has feelings for), and they come together even more because of it. Yes, there's some awkwardness, but it's overshadowed by the whole the-people-we-love-might-never-come-back angst of the situation. Spencer tells Brendon stories about growing up with Ryan, and Brendon talks about how he met Jon and Helia and their time in Audrey (all while the two of them are curled up together in the big bed ♥). There's one tiny little kiss that happens as they're falling asleep, and Brendon tells himself that no matter what happens to Jon and Ryan, he'll at least have Spencer.

I would love to know how exactly Gerard kept Frank from going insane after his dragon was taken. Gerard must have done something to keep Frank from running off too get himself killed.

Ugh, the Frank/Gerard backstory is kind of my favorite. Before they found Pete's Resistance camp, Gerard sort of started this frantic excursion to rebuild his lost sculptures. They'd scavenge around for parts, and he made it seem like something that needed to be done, because he knew if he projected enough desperation, Frank would concentrate on him and not on losing Xira. It worked until they got to the camp, and then once Frank saw the other Riders with dragons, he immediately started to withdraw into himself. And that's when Gerard got the idea to develop Rider armor; it was something else to keep himself and Frank occupied. It sometimes worked, but not always. :(

i am really fascinated by gerard and frank in this. i would love to know more about them together, how they kept going, why frank didn't give up. did they have sort of physical, emotionally fraught sex... you know... the obvious questions.


eta. i'm wondering how much the dragon thing plays into the connection (sexual and otherwise) that the riders have with their partners. i've been deeply influenced by reading pern since i was a kid, so that whole 'mating frenzy' thing is a happy place for me.

I haven't read the book(s?) you mention, but I am guessing that by 'mating frenzy' you mean that like, one female dragon "goes into heat" and suddenly all the dragons and all the humans bonded to the dragons are extremely horny all the time?

They met when Frank was needing a place to stay, and since Xira is so large, they needed someplace big enough to hold her. Gerard's warehouse was huge, and Frank asked if he and dragon could just stay the night, they'd be moving on in the morning. Gerard let them stay, and he was fascinated with Xira and Frank's stories of being a Rider. There was a natural connection between them, and Frank, or course, ends up staying permanently. Then the raids start, and as more and more refugee Riders start trickling in, Gerard decides that he'll open his place up as a safehouse to those needing shelter from the Government.

My question is, okay, not actually a question. I kind of just want you to tell me more about breeders. Like, are dragons bred to have specific strengths? Is it like horses where some are bred for speed and others strength? And if so, when it comes to the riders, are they picked for their compatibility to a certain dragon, or is it just "hey here's a rider who's come of age and this is the next available dragon"? And where are all the female riders?

Edited to add - Also, I need about a billion more words of bb!dragons and bb!riders bonding and learning how to fly together, etc. Do they go to school for that? Do dragons go through an awkward adolescent phase where they're all gangly and uncoordinated and moody? Because I think they should. I have a fantastic picture in my head of some of the dragons picking up on Spencer's bitchface and using it when they are thoroughly unimpressed. OH! TELL ME ABOUT MOODY DRAGONS AND BREEDERS AND BB!DRAGON SHENANIGANS!!

Okay, question one, re: breeding: I think it all depends on the Rider. Jon came from a long line of Riders, so naturally his father went to the breeders who handled his own bonding ceremony, and who also bred his father's dragon, etc. Jon's father knew Spencer's parents fairly well, and they were known for breeding exceptionally smart, perceptive dragons. Now, in Ryan's case, if he had actually been properly brought up to be a Rider, he probably would've been taken to the closest breeding house, since no one in his family were part of the Guild. He more than likely would not have been bonded with a dragon hand-picked for him like Jon did, but that wouldn't mean his relationship with his dragon would be any less stronger than Jon's with Helia, if that makes sense.

Question two, re: adolescent!dragons: Man, I hadn't even thought about that! I'm sure it's not the most fun going through puberty with your dragon, as both would be moody and emo, lol. In Jon's case, I think he and Helia probably skipped right over that, since they were hitting adolescence right when the raids started. :( However, I can see Jon's hormones being all in flux, and even in times of stress he'd still be, um, super horny, which would make for a lot of awkwardness when constant teenage boy masturbation comes in to play. DRAGONS OBVIOUSLY DO NOT JERK OFF LIKE THAT, SO HELIA IS KIND OF O_o. But Spencer wouldn't have been around any teen!dragons, because by that stage they've already long since been with their Riders.
