Help me out here, guys: what is the angstiest scenario you can think of that you enjoy the most in fic? This isn't pairing or fandom specific, I'm just talking in general. :)
The "I have to break up with you, because it's for your own good" scenario...because all that "doing the right thing but you don't know it and don't understand it" breaks my heart every time.
Two people desperately in love who can't be together, esp. if one of them pushes the other one away deliberately. *sniffs* I don't know that "enjoy" is right for that one, though! If there's a happy ending after all -- "Dammit, just admit you love me!" *smut* -- then there's enjoyment!
I think the most tragic scenario involves longtime unrequited love, then just when both people share a taste of what could be - one dies, leaving the other longing.
The couple meet in prison, have an on-again, off-again relationship, then one tricks the other into breaking his parole, thus getting him sent back to prison, which pisses him off and he tells his former lover that they're really through, thus making the former lover depressed, and he commits suicide by throwing himself off a 2nd-story balcony.
Not that this is a specific pairing and fandom, of course. ;)
That fic by disarm_d that I linked you to where Brendon's of the gay but Jon isn't/was just wasted broke my heart; for some reason it killed me especially hard; I loved/hated it; I must stop the semicolons.
