Title: A Moment in Black and White

For the lostsquee Lost Riffs prompt: an event on the island as seen by any non-human being


He learns quickly that it’s all about sound. Or the lack there of.

When the two of them yell at each other in sharp, rough-edged tones, he stretches out on the sand and waits, because it’s the anger even he can recognize won’t last. It never does.

The noise dies down. They back away from each other slowly, breaking apart altogether as one walks off into the jungle while the other stays on the beach.

Now, Vincent knows, the coast is clear.

“Seems like you always know when I just got a scoldin’,” the man says to him as Vincent butts his head up under the man’s arm. He smiles, and Vincent knows enough about people to know when smiles are false.

He licks the man’s chin--It’s okay. Because Vincent also knows the man is never alone for long; his other half always returns.

Aww, this is just so sweet. I love Jack and Sawyer having this combative relationship, but I love that, even though Jack always walks away, he also always returns. And that Vincent is there to comfort Sawyer and wait with him, that is just too cute.

I'm so happy you wrote this. The moment non-human prompt was mentioned, I was secretly longing for a sweet Vincent fic and now I got one. :)

And dogs DO know these things! They're so intuitive. And I love the image of Sawyer softening up for him--showing that sweeter side. Plus the idea of even Vincent knowing that they're two halves of the same soul. Adorable, sweet, and fun. Great job!
