The return of the polar bears!
*huggles her show to her bosom*
A Tale of Two Cities (3.01)
I love and hate the fact that I am incapable of watching a Jack ep without crying at some point. It's pretty much a tradition now, I don't know why I haven't just started keeping Kleenex next to me. Look how far we've come with Jack; two whole seasons' worth of flashbacks and yet it still hurts to see him be so self-destructive, so obsessed with fixing, when it really shouldn't surprise us at all. We've all been waiting for the time when Jack really starts to crack and come apart, but tonight showed us that, well, cracking isn't actually anything new to Jack. It comes back to the revolving Jack!theme of letting go and knowing when to give up. And it's simply not in Jack's DNA to do so.
How interesting that Jack was completely and utterly open with Sarah about the woman he almost cheated on her with, while Sarah can't even give up a name. Surely she knows Jack well enough to know that he's not one to let sleeping dogs lie. I understand that this was all a way to give what ultimately was false foreshadowing, but still...she should've known better.
Now, as for Juliette...wow. I think I'm in love. No, seriously. I don't know what her game is or how she's manipulating Jack for Ben (BEN!!! WTF?!), but you can see it in her eyes; she knows him, and I think she'd know him without a hefty file full of Jack!stats in front of her. I also don't think it's a coincidence that she vaguely resembles Sarah, but that's probably me reading too much into things. I am utterly captivated by her, and it's about damn time this show gave me a woman I can actually care about and support. Nothing against Sun and the others, but...*flail* As of this moment, Juliette has major brownie points with me.
Not to say I wasn't oddly fascinated with Kate tonight. Evi may be proving more and more as time goes by that she's a total nutjob, but she's learning to be a real honest-to-god actor, I think. I was impressed with her performance when she was brought back to the cage. The way she schooled her emotions and her facial features after Sawyer asked if she was okay...she's learning from Foxy! Good Evi, less is more, especially when you know how to actually work with "less". Let's just hope she keeps this up for the rest of the season.
"It only took the bears two hours." LOLZ. Oh, Sawyer, you little monkey. I'm thinking it's now written into Josh's contract that he's to be shot in some fashion every few episodes. He really does get the crap beat out of him, poor thing.
I just loved the balance of tonight, and how completely different the tone was as opposed to "Man of Science". You can feel the shift from the OMGWTFHATCH mania of last season to the old school feel of season one, i.e. it's all the people. We got the OMGWTF moment out of the way immediately, and I'm so happy that Damon and Carlton put that bit mythology in the background to focus on what makes this show tick in the first place. "That was a long time ago"...whoa. But still, these are not savages. Ethan's psycho act was probably just that, and Goodwin probably wouldn't have killed Ana Lucia. And yet, just because we now know they live in houses and have book clubs and make muffins doesn't mean anything should be taken a face value.
Walt said "it's not real," so what is real?
I wanted this ep to be three hours long. I want it to be next week. I have dearly, dearly missed my show, and I'm SO HAPPY it's back.
Oh, and I guess Zeke's The Gay Guy. Pfft.
