So I'm watching swimming last night, and after Phelps beats the living shit of the world record in the 200m, Mr. Foxx leans over and asks if I'm "writing gay slash porn" in my head for Phelps and Matt Grevers.

Not that several people on my flist haven't already made comments about this already, but really. Ur doing it wrong. And this isn't just a bandom thing, or a "teenie" thing. It's a fandom trend with people who don't seem to possess the circuitry in their brain that tells them shoving fandom into the faces of celebrities is a really bad idea. This isn't exclusive to teenagers or RPS-related fandoms; earlier this year, a woman took a leather bound copy of her epic fic to a con and presented it to the SGA cast. I don't think it was a slash fic, but STILL. GAH. I get physically ill when I so much as think about what those girls asked Ryan to do; it's not cute and it's not funny--it's embarrassing and completely disrespects the fourth wall (which is already having serious issues when it comes to RPS fandoms in general), not to mention the band/people involved. This is why I nearly had a nervous breakdown before my m&g; had this happened in front of me, I might've thrown up on Zack.

And I thought seeing "ryden and joncer 4 evar" on the big screen during HCT was atrocious. Baby Jesus weeps for you, Ryan Ross.

Yesterday was a crap day in terms of how I feel about fandom perceptions. This didn't help.

Fandom should have more people writing swimmer slash and fewer people doing idiotic things that make me want to disown it. :(

I remember seeing those messages for the first time at HCT in Boston and being totally freaked out/REALLY ANNOYED. Not on, guys.

I have this horror of meeting dudes in bands for this very reason. Because I honestly would love to get the chance to tell them that they're awesome and I'm a big fan; yet somehow I must convey "i'mahugefanbutisweartogodi'mnotcrazy" at the same time. I should not *have* to try to convey that, but people with no impulse control seem to make it necessary. SIGH.

I just covered my face with my hands while reading that and went, "Ohhhhhhh god, no, why." I actually felt sick to my stomach, not even kidding.

this is fucking CREEPY those kids need therapy, or simply a brain.

Oh God, I kept wanting to stop reading - and it just kept getting worse. I cannot convey in words how icky that made me feel.

That said, Phelps and Grevers. Uh, yes. Or the US diving team? So precious. The NBC spots for them were hilarious; "we like to make each other laugh. . .with like, injokes and stuff."

Y'know, that started out to be an amazing experience--kinda demanding at the show, but that could be how they wrote it up. But then the Ryden exists pictures and just--just NO. SO SO SO WRONG. The book was a neat idea, but they fucked it up, wow. Creepy.

God, that post. I actually had to close the window and walk away when I saw the pictures because holy crap did that freak me out. It's just. They know it's out there, and I'm sure it's much easier to pretend it isn't when it isn't shoved in their faces. Ugh. Creepsters.

it's very cringe-worthy. even if the guys were laughing...trust me, they weren't laughing with you crazy fan.

i always think that i'll die of embarrassement if at a m&g I see something like that. it's very disrespectful. keep the fandom stuff to your head and the internet.

Ahhhhh swimslash. I wrote quite a bit of it last Olympics, and then "six degrees" became three degrees of separation in several cases and it got a little weird. That's subsided though, for whatever reason, even though Grevers made the team annnnd now we're down to two degrees.

The world swimming community is actually a lot smaller than you'd think. I didn't realize this until I got to college and all the sudden I was rooming with a girl who'd been Katie Hoff's good friend once upon a time. "But then Katie got fast and moved away and never called."

I was reminded of the person who linked poor MikeyWay to Waycest fic. DON'T DO THAT!

Oh god those pictures. I hadn't seen them until today, and...wow, I feel really uncomfortable about them.

HOWEVER, Phelps and Grevers. Well, are you? If you don't, I will; I mean, I already wrote gymnast slash so I might as well. BUT I WILL NEVER SHOW THEM MY FIC jdfdsdsgdhsg why do people DO that.

Ugh, those pictures. Like, I get weirdly squicked enough by M&Gs without it being like that. That to me is sort like stalking? IDK, but most of that goes waaaaaay over the line in my book. Like, getting an autograph/picture at a legit M&G is fine (I would be weirded out, but I would say 99% of people are totes fine with it, and that's cool), but tracking down people at the airport and asking for things (objects, pictures, anything) is crossing a line that does not need to be crossed. And on top of that, "Ryden exists?" Are you fucking kidding me with that shit? Oh my God. I. Just. The whole thing weirds me out so bad, and I am so embarrassed for those girls because they may never realize that it was creepy.

In other news, Michael Phelps is amazing and also refreshingly normal-seeming for a bazillion-time Olympic gold medalist.

ugh, that entire post makes me so uncomfortable. It makes me really sad that people have been doing creepy shit like that in RPS fandoms (and others, but in RPS it just seems far worse) for YEARS AND YEARS and still don't get that it's creepy and wrong.

I like to pretend bands themselves do not know that fandom exists, and that they will never ever know it! /o\ So so uncomfortable. :(

I was kind of surprised that not a single person replied to that post to say OMG WHAT NO YOU DON'T DO THAT!!!! I had forgotten about this particular aspect of being in an RPS fandom D:

Ugh. I love my fourth wall with an unnatural fondness. Those people that are up there performing and walking around are not the same people I read about in these slash stories, they just look a lot like them.
