The 23rd Psalm (2.10)
It's like somehow I finally realized tonight just how much I missed this show. Not just from the hiatus, but in general. More so than with "What Kate Did" or "Collison", tonight's ep really takes us back to that point I loved in season one where everything's still a mystery while the pieces fall into place in front of us. And the mystery tonight wasn't hatch-centric (well, for the most part), which I think goes along way. This fandom has become saturated almost with mythology surrounding numbers and computers and the like--sometimes it's still nice to sit back and let the characters take center stage, which, to be honest, hasn't happened all that much this season.
Tonight, thank God (heh), we're moving back in the right direction.
Congratulations to Eko for stealing the award for Darkest Flashback from Sawyer, a prime example of why this show really needs its later time slot this season. What I loved most about Eko's story is that, like Sawyer, we still don't know in the end where his intentions lie. It's obvious he's been guilt-stricken and wants forgiveness, yet he gives Charlie back his heroin. Odd move for a guy that's claiming to be a priest now. There are several ways you could read that action, and to me that just makes Eko an even more layered character. Bravo Damon and Carlton, you nailed this one. He's a little scary and a little moving all at once. I think we're also going to find that his encounter with Teh Black Tentacle o' Doom(tm) is going to reflect upon Locke's--Locke felt it was his right to look into the "eye of the island", but I think Eko looks because it's there. Wow, I can't wait to see where that goes.
While I was flailing about over the BTD, I kept flashing back to The Abyss.
I think this was a good change up for Dom, not mention Charlie. FINALLY that disgusting self-righteousness gets thrown out for something more subtle and subdued and YAY FOR HEROIN!CHARLIE OMGZ!!! Yes, I admit it. I actually felt the urge to write angsty Charlie/Claire. The world as we know it has ended.
Because damn, boy. She's blonde, but she ain't that blonde. And did anyone else squee juuuust a little at the sight of her and Aaron sitting with Eko? Nothing shippy, mind you, just...very sweet. As in Sawyer-reading-car-magazines sweet. :D
Of course, we can't leave the hatch alone for entire fourty-five minutes. And Michael is eventually going to blow them up. I'm fairly certain the screen said You need to come and get me, otherwise why is Michael so hell bent on getting the guns and leaving next week? And you could just see it in his eyes when Jack told him they'd go get Walt when the time was right--that's SO not going to work in Michaeland.
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure a plane full of gas isn't just going to burn peacefully in the middle of a jungle. Just saying. And good God, did no one think that the people on the beach would see smoke and think ZOMG OTHERS?! Again, just saying. But, it made for nice drama.
Maybe I'm over Skate. Or maybe I just prefer the angst and tension of the triangle when it all comes down to it. But there's just something about them being domestic that just...eh. Granted, I will take Sawyer being grumpy and half dressed any day. What I *did* love was Jack offering him medication without any hesitation whatsoever, and Kate's look of gratitude in the end. That one little shot proves just how far Jack and Sawyer have come in their relationship. *smushes them*
And Hurley and Libby? I might die of teh cute. :D
